"And the night shall be filled with music / and the cares that infest the day / Shall fold their tents like nomads / And subtlely steal away."

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Welcome to Metro Detroit's most covet-ous zip code of late and all of the accoutrements that burgeoning wealth and culture often associated with it typically brings.
For one, a music store, and a piano music store at that.
Hammell has been drawing strong crowds to its summer music series, which boasts an eclectic music offering of everything from student and adult piano recitals, to more formal ticketed concerts involving local musicians, bands and stars.
Or, as longtime West Bloomfield-based piano man Bob Seeley said from the Hammell recital hall stage the other day, "It's a beautiful venue and I'd like to thank the Steinway people for providing the pianos."
Indeed, Seeley and Bob Baldori (longtime keyboardist for rocker Chuck Berry's traveling band) recently blew out the house jam-ming away on two Steinway & Sons pianos valued at about $220,000, covering all manner of piano-based jazz, blues, swing, slide and big band favorites.
Hammell, whose staff includes popular Metro Detroit keyboard favorite Lance Luce, has put together an eclectic summer concert series that you see listed under Coming Events at the stores website, found online at www.hammell.com.
Last month, they even had a Verizon Wireless cell phone technology demonstration, something in keeping with the needs of a mature audience (middle-aged and above) that are likely candidates to buy their wares.
Two more store events of note remain on the 2006 summer schedule:
+++ Thursday, July 20 : "Tuscany at the Lakes" @ 7:30 p.m., featuring Francesco Attesti on piano with vocalist Annika Kaschenz and a special guest performance by Alexandria Clark (tickets $20)
+++ Sunday Aug. 13 - Friday Aug. 18: Laura Impastato's 19th annual piano workshop / weeklong.
Bob Seeley and Bob Baldori were such a hit that they'll return to the same venue in September. Otherwise, Hammell Music also put together a class called "Piano 101," which its website describes as "...a 6-week primer for adults who have always wanted to play the piano, but didn't think they had the time or talent."
The Hammell Music store and showroom are located in the heart of high-growth Commerce Township, at 2700 E. West Maple Road, on the corner of the new M-5 freeway and Maple Road (15 Mile), just west of Haggerty. The general location is about four miles north of the I-275 and I-696 merge in northwest Oakland County.
